Send video and audio from OBS Studio to Playback

You can use live streaming apps like OBS Studio to produce a video and audio feed for Playback. This allows you to capture video and audio from applications outside your browser create a custom video production.

For this tutorial, we are using OBS Studio. You can follow similar steps using other live streaming apps with virtual camera support (e.g. Streamlabs OBS, vMix, Ecamm Live).

Setup

Send video from OBS

  1. Activate the OBS virtual camera
    1. To export your video feed from OBS, click “start virtual camera.”

  2. Select your OBS virtual camera in Playback
    1. Start or join the stage in a Playback room
    2. Open the camera device selector and choose the “OBS Virtual Camera.” If the OBS virtual camera does not appear in the device list after your first setup, try restarting your browser.

Send audio from OBS

  1. Install a virtual audio device on your computer
    1. Install VB-Cable or any virtual audio device that can receive and send audio between applications.
      1. Note: To install VB-Cable on PC, you’ll need to run the installer package in administrator mode. Right click the installer program and select “run as administrator.” Then you will need to restart your computer.
  2. Select VB-Cable as your audio monitoring device in OBS
    1. In OBS, go to Settings > Audio > Advanced and select VB-Cable as your Monitoring Device. If VB-Cable does not appear in the device list after your first setup, you may need to restart your browser or computer (likely for PC).

  3. Enable audio monitoring in OBS
    1. Open Advanced Audio Properties in OBS via the settings cog in the Audio Mixer section.
    2. Enable monitoring on all the audio sources you want to send to Playback. Choose "Monitor Only (mute output)" if you only want to hear the audio on Playback. Choose "Monitor and Output" if you want to hear the audio through your system output source and on Playback.

  4. Select the VB-Cable in Playback
    1. Start or join the stage in a Playback room
    2. Open the microphone device selector and choose the “VB-Cable.” If the option doesn’t appear you may need to restart your browser.
